I wasn’t planning on doing an O’s-Zone Watch if the Orioles lost the game… but then Topher went to the game and did some awesome promo work. As you can see, he met the Orioles bird. And he also sat behind the dugout/home plate and tried to get some TV time. So I’ll do a recap anyways (btw, that game was EXTRA early for a Wednesday… ?).
23 MAY 2012: Red Sox 6, Orioles 5
Oriole Park At Camden Yards (27,806 attendance)**
**So I guess it wasn’t too early…
Nick Johnson hit 2 HRs, but the O’s fell kind of flat. Xavier Avery added a few hits and Adam Jones extended his hit streak to 15 games. The Orioles offense is, IMO, relying too much on the long ball. They won’t be able to outslug everyone, every time.
Jake Arrieta continues to struggle after starting so dominant. He drops to 2-5 after losing his last 3 decisions. He’s giving up a lot of hits–which leads to a lot of runs. Also, the overworked bullpen got tagged a few times. Luis Ayala and Darren O’Day gave up a few runs before Troy Patten closed it out.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Xavier Avery
I was tempted to give this to Scott Podsednik for hitting the go-ahead HR off O’Day in the 8th. But this is an O’s column. So I was going to give it to Adam Jones for keeping his hot streak alive.
Until I saw that Xavier Avery throw Kevin Youkilis out at home plate. I don’t think good defensive plays get enough attention. Especially outfield assists.
